BACON MAY INCREASE CANCER RISK, BUT IT ISN’T THE WORST THING FOR YOUR BODY

MODERATION IS KEY

Eating a diet heavy in processed meats like hot dogs and salami can increase people’s risk of developing colorectal cancer, according to a statement from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization.
After considering the results of more than 800 studies, the committee classified processed meats as a Group 1 carcinogen, which is known to cause cancer in humans—other agents in that group include alcohol, smoking, and various chemical compounds. Red meat, such as beef or pork, was categorized as a Group 2A possible carcinogen.
But having a diet filled with bacon and sausage doesn’t mean that a person is likely to develop cancer as much as a smoker is likely to. Three out of every 10,000 cases of colorectal cancer is caused by processed meats, a nutritional and gastrointestinal health expert told The Guardian—that’s about 40 cases in the U.S. per year. Smoking, on the other hand, is responsible for 30 percent of all cancer deaths (and many more cases), which is almost 177,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone.
So although the evidence supporting the link between red and processed meats and an elevated cancer risk is strong, eating those foods isn’t the biggest cancer risk—smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption are still responsible for millions more deaths worldwide.
"For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed," said Kurt Straif, the head of the IARC program, in a press release.
As Cancer Research UK points out, a little meat isn’t bad for you, as long as it’s in moderation.

  1. I thought that this was very surprising because I really didn't know that bacon or any type of pork can cause cancer. But when I was reading this I thought that the number of people die from smoking and obesity and also alcohol. but I think that what it is trying to say that not all meat will make you have cancer but just don't have too much meat or this will be your results in your life.

  2. This is pretty crazy bc so many people like those kind of meats especially bacon. So I think people are also going to think this is crazy bc bacon is so good but it is also bad for you. I think people should know about this though bc this could affect them. And people need to watch how much red meat they eat.

  3. When I was growing up, my aunt always told me its never good to eat so much meat. She told me every time I'd go to mexico, I'd get fat or you'll die from too much. I don't see anything wrong with eating meat, just eat small amounts. This is a very useful article and should be spread to others. There are many people out there that eat a lot of meat on a daily basis.

  6. Growing up my grandmother would always cooked meats in every food course breakfast, lunch, and dinner . So this article scares me it almost makes me want to be a vegetarian. Keeping in mind my family eats so much meat on special occasions and even on the day to day basis its urging me to spread the word and save my family from any possible health risks.

  7. I think that this is crazy because I wouldn't expect bacon or other meats could cause some type of cancer. That means people have to watch what they eat so they can prevent this from happening. Cancer is one of the worst things to have but other things cause it also.

  8. Whoa, that is crazy, I never thought that bacon and other meats could lead to some type of cancer. I'm going to watch the types of meat I eat from now on. Cancer is a deadly disease and I don't want no one in the world to get it, but there's other things that lead to it also. We just have to watch what we eat.

  12. Wow this is very surprising. I eat meat EVERY single day. I didn't know what meat could cause cancer. I've always been told don't smoke or you'll get cancer or don't drink too much or you could have liver cancer. But never have I ever been told about meat. This makes me cautious about every meat I eat. So now not only am I going to watch my calories but I am going to watch my meat as well!
